Several years ago, I learned that my great-grandmother was an avid writer. She left many journals and letters, written in Urdu. One of her last journals was penned during a journey that she and my great-grandfather took in 1949 from India to Mecca via bus, train, and ship. The vivid imagery invoked in her writing transported me to another time and place. My great-grandmother’s name was Safdari [pronounced sufdari].
This site and all my work is inspired by generations of women storytellers.
SUFDARI is written by Laila Kazmi, a NW Emmy® Award-winning producer with a penchant for South Asian, Middle Eastern, and Latin American arts, film, and literature.
