I learned about Paula Nava Madrigal when I met tenor José Iñiguez. He enthusiastically introduced me to the conductor for his ‘Encanto’ concert series. It is not often that one meets a classical music conductor who is a woman, let alone a woman who is an immigrant from Mexico. I was immediately intrigued and decided to bring her story to a Northwest audience.
Originally produced for KCTS 9, Seattle’s PBS television station, this story re-aired on KPBS in San Diego and the World Channel at WGBH in Boston.
Paula Nava Madrigal started conducting almost by chance. She was a cellist in the orchestra at Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara in Mexico. When their regular conductor became sick, she and her classmates took turns conducting.
“Someone [had] to do it,” she says. “And when I did it, I loved it!”
